We sat down with Derek Foss to find out why he enjoys being a coalition member.
What Sector of the community do you represent at the coalition meetings?

Why do you feel passionate about the youth in our community?
Youth are the future of our community. If we have healthy and empowered youth, our entire community will benefit.
Why do you feel strongly that the youth in our community should be alcohol, tobacco, and drug free?
Drug, alcohol, and tobacco use as a youth can lead to lifelong addiction and potential legal consequences that can severely inhibit a person's ability to be a success. I want to see all of our youth be successful and live long, healthy lives.
In your opinion, what are you most proud of that the coalition has done or is working on?
I am very impressed by the Outdoor Experiential Education program implemented at Rainy River Community College and how well it has been received.

The Outdoor Experiential Education program
What impact do you believe the coalition is making on the community?
I believe that this coalition is bringing up a topic that everyone knows about but doesn't talk about. It brings the "elephant in the room" to the forefront of conversation. The coalition has been essential in showing youth and adults that their beliefs about alcohol use may not be accurate.

The KAPE Coalition was established in 2015 through the Koochiching County Public Health Department. At the same time, the coalition was awarded a Partnerships for Success Grant for Rainy River Community College. One year later, the coalition was awarded a Planning and Implementation grant for the International Falls Area High School.
